Do I Need a Referral from my Doctor to Come to Physical Therapy?
A question we are often asked by people when they are seeking physical therapy is “do I need a referral from my doctor?” The answer to this question is…maybe. But thanks to some legislation passed in January of 2014, it is now easier for most people to come directly to our office (this is referred to as Direct Access by those of us in the physical therapy world).
How does this work? Well, with the exception of a few insurances (which we will discuss later), you may now begin physical therapy without first getting a referral from your doctor. We can treat you for up to 12 visits (or over a time period of up to 45 days). If you and your physical therapist felt it was necessary to continue treatment beyond that time, you would make an appointment with your doctor, and if they agree, they would give you a referral to continue physical therapy.
As mentioned above, some insurance companies will not pay for your physical therapy unless you first receive a referral from your doctor. Medicare, workers compensation insurances companies, and some private insurance companies require that we have a referral on file from your doctor in order to pay for your treatment. Our Patient Care Coordinators are very knowledgeable on how this all works, and they will be happy to call your insurance and let you know the requirements.
If you are experiencing pain or a problem we can help you with, let us know. We would love to see you!
